INITIAL GUIDE TO WRITE AN EXPOSITORY ESSAY

An expository essay is an informative essay type that tends to explain other’s view regarding a situation. They are best defined and developed by using statistical data or including some evidence that gives a detailed picture of the subject. As they are based on facts, there is no possibility of adding anecdotes, arguments and criticism. Expositions use orderly analysis and similar illustrations. Expository essays are written in the third person.
The expository essays follow a unique pattern whose important points are summarised under:
 Defining thesis statement narrowly which is then supported within the essay content
 A distinct topic in each supporting paragraph must be directly related with the help of transitional phrases and words
 Identify your method by making an outline for it. Follow a method which can best meet your needs
 Relating another’s work can be put in larger context.
 A careful writing which can be understandable by defined audiences is necessary. Inform your readers that how have you reached to a conclusion so that they may follow correct reasoning.
 Use precise words to define your thought
 Correct errors by proofreading your content
 A sequence should be followed while placing the body paragraphs of an expository essay
 A sensible transition should be made to relate one topic with another.
 Organise the essay by listing main sections which will be discussed further in the body of your essay. Fill supports for each body paragraph
 Topic sentence is usually written once at the top of your essay, but it is far much better to create a topic sentence for each body paragraph which state a problem at a time
 The introduction paragraph comprises of the thesis statement. It is meant to introduce each problem which is then discussed in the body. An introduction should be brief and catchy using simple sentence structure
 The conclusion is meant to restate the discussion’s major points. Close your expository essay in an appropriate manner and avoid introducing a new issue in the end
An expository essay must be written on a topic that is of prime importance and interest of the student. It is beneficial to consult your instructor after drawing an outline of your essay and getting it approved.
